Trying to Compete with a Shoebox
"The idea to create a holistic medication management system came while looking at a cardboard shoebox. My grandfather was taking many medications and used to organise them in a shoebox. He had his own system of managing them, but it was ineffective and often dangerous to his health. That was the moment I thought there had to be a better way to manage our patients' treatment. That was the moment I realised we had to compete with a shoebox."
— Ioannis Alafakis, MSc Pharmacist
Two Parallel Worlds with a Shared Vision
The problem of non-adherence to medication became even more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the healthcare system reached its limits. The crisis highlighted the urgent need for better patient care, remote monitoring, and innovative medication management solutions."
Through ENABLE, a European COST action monitoring adherence technologies, it became clear that despite global technological progress, Greece showed significant gaps in innovation in this field. Within this context, Ioannis Alafakis met Dr. Theodosia Charitou. They immediately shared the same vision: to create a technology tailored to Greek culture and reality.
Dr. Charitou, a researcher, bioinformatician, and ENABLE representative for technology evaluation, and Ioannis Alafakis, entrepreneur and pharmacist, joined forces with a common goal — to create maMEDS, the first Greek company focused exclusively on medication management and adherence.
The goal of maMEDS is not only to develop innovative solutions, but also to educate everyone involved — from patients and caregivers to pharmacists and healthcare professionals — offering a holistic approach to healthcare.
